Hahnemuhle Paper Chosen for Biblical Undertaking

January 4, 2006

Hahnemuhle USA is pleased to announce that they have been chosen to be a part of one of the greatest literary and art projects of modern time. St. John’s Abbey and University in Minnesota is in the process of producing the first illuminated, handwritten Bible in over 500 years. Donald Jackson, Senior Scribe to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, is leading a collaborative team of scribes and artists in this historic undertaking which will combine ancient techniques with modern technology and symbolism.

Each page is laid-out digitally before being illustrated and scribed by hand using traditional tools and materials. A carefully chosen committee is in charge of overseeing and approving the theological content and emphasis of each illustration.

The finished original will be made using traditional materials on calf-skin vellum bound into seven 16x24” volumes. Upon completion of the original, St. John’s plans to create a limited number of full-size reproductions using inkjet printing on Hahnemuhle’s Photo Rag Duo® 316gsm. Additionally, high-quality giclée prints of the pages and illuminations in the Saint John’s Bible are now available for purchase. These prints are also being produced on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Duo® using the most cutting edge digital imaging technology to ensure that every print remains true to the original.

Martin Kerver, president of Hahnemuhle USA says, “I’m very excited about the St. John’s Bible project. I recently had the privilege of visiting St. John’s to see the work for myself and it is breathtaking. This task is history in the making and we are truly honored to be a part of it.”

The Saint John’s Bible Project is much more than another bible. The finished bible, the prints and the reproductions are the result of a rare coupling of history, tradition and modern innovation that might not be seen again in our lifetime.

The Saint John’s Bible began its national and international exhibition tour last April with the opening of Illuminating the Word at The Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Throughout the next three years, The Saint John’s Bible will travel to London and several museums throughout the United States. Select prints from the Bible will be on display at the Hahnemuhle booth at the upcoming PMA show in Orlando.
