Graphics, Felt Tips and Markers

The term graphics is a collective name give to all the drawing arts where,
in contrast to painting, the line and not the color is the decisive feature.
In addition to actual hand drawings the graphic arts usually include all forms
of print graphics such as woodcut, etching, lithograph and monotype.

The primary element of the graphic arts is the line that in hand drawing is drawn directly on the paper, e.g. with charcoal, pen or silverpoint. In print graphics
the lines are scored into the plate using a stylus or etching needle and then printed onto paper. There is a distinction between original and reproduction graphics, which prior to the invention of photography was an important medium for circulating photographs. Advertising art has acquired an important role,
for example in the shape of flyers, posters, etc.

Recommended Paper
Special layout papers are available for these painting techniques that must display two important features: first of all they must be thin and semi-transparent so that when another sheet of paper is laid on top the basic sketch can be copied through. The paper must also be bleed proof. Even when several colors are superimposed one over the other the color must not be visible on the reverse side of the paper. To achieve this property the paper is retroactively primed.

Specially recommended: Hahnemühle Layout Papers with extra smooth surface. This surface produces extremely brilliant colors.
