In ART DICINE Project No. 1 „Metropolis”, Tradition meets the Innovation of Digital FineArt Papers, produced by Hahnemühle FineArt GmbH. The natural paper, especially improved for ink jet printing, is suited for new artistic applications and was used for the first world-wide edition of Metropolis.
Mystical, futuristic and visionary … such is the impression created even today by the more than one million single frames from the Fritz Lang’s movie “Metropolis” of 1927. For the world premiere of ART DICINE, over 60 frames, scenes and sequences were chosen, in cooperation with the Recom, Cruse, Epson and NEWVICOM companies, who purchased distribution rights from the Murnau Foundation. During the preparation phase, which took more than a year, scenes from the digital version of the original film were scanned and printed on various types of Digital FineArt papers, produced by Hahnemühle. „The biggest challenge was to transfer the intensive black-and-white color play and the mystical mood of the original film material into the large-format printouts,” explains Jörg Adomat, Managing Director of Hahnemühle FineArt GmbH. The best results were obtained in cooperation with Recom and Epson, on the Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308. This paper, which is 100% rag paper, is now used world-wide for the first edition of ART DICINE Metropolis. Photo Rag 308 is a very soft paper, with silky-smooth surface, exceptionally intense blacks and a large color range.
In particular, in the case of large format pigment ink printing, these properties guarantee an impressive contour sharpness, uniformity and intensity.
The papers offered in the Digital FineArt collection are classical painting papers, specially treted for inkjet printing, produced in Germany’s oldest manufacturing facility for artistic papers. „In 1997 the Hahnemühle team developed the idea to coat artistic paper in such a way that would make it suitable for artistic prints made using the inkjet technique,” explains Jörg Adomat. The Digital FineArt paper is particularly suitable for exclusive photography, computer art, painting and photographic reproductions. The printouts are made with high-quality inks on printers or plotters of all renowned producers. They captivate the viewer with the extraordinary color brilliance, their sensuality and the atmosphere which they radiate. In addition, the paper is extremely resistant to ageing and the influence of light. The collection of Digital FineArt papers makes the Hahnemühle FineArt GmbH company the undisputed world leader in this market segment.
The selection of the first 60 stills, scenes and sequences of the ART DICINE Metropolis edition can be viewed by the end of January 2005, in the M restaurant, at Taunusstrasse 49 in Wiesbaden. Further exhibitions are planned for 2005 in Munich, Stuttgart, Düsseldorf, Berlin and Hamburg.
