1584

Papermaker Merten Spieß founded the paper mill as 'Reylingehäusische Papiermühle'.

1709

Making paper is an art and was done entirely by hand until the invention of the first paper machine at the end of the 18th century.

1774

Replica of the foundation charter of the paper mill from 1774.

1871

A machine part from 1871 still runs in the genuine mould-made paper machine today.

1883

The first filtration papers are produced and registered as grades.

1886

Carl Hahne is the originator of the name "Büttenpapierfabrik Hahnemühle".

1902

Hahnemühle's machinery grows, the number of employees increases and Hahnemühle becomes a limited company.

1927

Hahnemühle now belongs to the Schleicher & Schuell Group based in Düren, Germany.

1956

Picasso prints his lithograph "Portrait de Jacqueline" on Hahnemühle paper.

1958

Salvador Dalí used Hahnemühle Ingres mould-made paper for his artworks.

1965

All papers are vegan due to glue based on a synthetic compound which is biodegradable.

1997

Hahnemühle is the inventor of Digital FineArt papers. First paper: German Etching.

2001

Photo Rag® inspires photographers and becomes the benchmark paper for the entire industry.

2008

"Green Rooster" environmental initiative launched to promote climate and environmental protection and social projects.

2010

Hahnemühle in Space: Elaine Duigenan sends a Photo Rag® Print into space on the ISS with astronaut Leland Melvin.

2016

Hahnemühle is named "Brand of the Century" for the first time and is continuously recertified.

2019

Papers made from fast-growing plant fibres from bamboo, hemp, agave and sugar cane, naturally from Hahnemühle.

2023

Hahnemühle launches automated production of extraction thimbles driven by artificial intelligence (AI).
